If you haven’t yet considered Bulgaria for your next ski vacation, you will be surprised by its long world-class slopes for both daytime and night-time skiing and snowboarding among impressive mountains and crisp air. Borovets is the oldest winter resort in Bulgaria located in the Rila mountains with a transfer from Sofia airport of about 1-1½ hours. There are 58 kms of runs at all levels - for beginners, for intermediates and for expert alpine skiers and snowboarders. On one of the runs - Yastrebets (1,340-2,369m) - there was a Men’s World Cup Competition in 1981. The other ski areas are Central Borovets (1,337-1,780m) and Markudzhik Valley (2,340-2,550m), the latter is located at the foot of Mount Mussala, the highest summit in the Balkans. The scenery there is breath-taking with views across to the 2,925m high snowcovered peak, glistening in the sun. Bansko is set on a flat valley floor in the spectacular Pirin National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site). It has been developed as a modern winter and all seasons mountain resort with 48.2 kms of slopes for all levels and 8.1kms of ski routes available. There are 14 lifts that get you from 990 to 2,560m. The highest ski runs start just below Todorka peak (2,746m) and there is a great view to the green valley and snow-covered Rila mountain range. Bansko is an old town with cobbled alleys, 19th century picturesque houses and one of the biggest Orthodox churches built during the Ottoman period. There are many traditional restaurants (mehana) offering local cuisine and bars with lively nightlife. Pamporovo in the Rhodopi mountains has 25 kms of runs with the highest at 1,926m and 18 lifts. Skiing includes views of endless pine-covered hills and a breathtaking view from Snezhanka Peak where most of the ski runs start. Pamporovo is connected with a shuttle bus to the Mechi Chal ski runs, the longest in Bulgaria, so you can enjoy a refreshing change for a day. But the unique benefit you get is the weather - due to the strong Mediterranean climatic influence there are 120 sunny days during the winter season.
