Being one of Europe’s oldest cities, Sofia preserves many valuable monuments. Exploring the city’s streets you can see the Roman ruins of the Eastern Gate from the days when Sofia was Serdika and Sredets, dating from the 2nd-4th centuries AD, exhibited in the underpass connecting the Presidential Palace and the Ministerial Council - a contrasting ensemble of Socialist Classicism buildings. The Saint Sofia Basilica, founded during the reign of Justinian (527-565), is one of the oldest churches in the capital. It was the city’s major church during the Middle Ages, and under the Ottomans it was used as a mosque. Nearby you’ll be overwhelmed by the imposing size and golden domes of St. Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral. Its bell tower rises to a height of 53 metres, and houses 12 bells. The building is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, the second largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Directly across from the church is the National Gallery of Art, which often exhibits works by world-famous artists. The National Museum of History, with its collection from prehistoric times to the present day, is located on the lower slopes of Vitosha Mountain. Close to the museum is Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Bulgaria’s greatest treasures. The church consists of three buildings - the eastern church was built in the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century by Sevastocrator Kaloyan, who ordered a second two-storey building to be erected next to it. The frescoes in this second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings.
